This indicator shows the death rate per 100,000 population due to drug poisoning.

Why is this important?

Drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury death in the United States, with over 100 drug overdose deaths occurring every day. The death rate due to drug overdose has been increasing over the last few decades. The majority of deaths due to pharmaceutical overdose involve opioid analgesics (prescription painkillers). Those who die from drug overdose are more likely to be male, Caucasian, or between the ages of 45 and 49. Although the majority of drug overdose deaths are accidental, they may also be intentional or of undetermined intent.
The Healthy People 2030 national health target is to reduce drug overdose deaths to 20.7 deaths per 100,000 population.

Change in methodology for 2019-2021:
Beginning with County Health Rankings' 2024 Annual Data Release, data from the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program were used in the calculation of the denominator for this measure. In previous data releases, the denominator was calculated from the National Center for Health Statistics Bridged-Race Population Estimates.
