Age- Adjusted Hospitalization Rate for Mental Health Disorder among Children

This indicator shows the age-adjusted hospitalization rate (per 10,000 population under 18 years) of residents under 18 due to mental health disorder. Cases include adjustment disorders; anxiety disorders; attention deficit conduct and disruptive behavior disorders; delirium, dementia, amnestic and other cognitive disorders; disorders usually diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence; mood disorders; personality disorders; schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders; and impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified. This indicator is identified by ICD-9-CM codes 290-319 for years 2010-2015 and by ICD-10-CM codes F01-F99 for year 2016.

Why is this important?

Mental disorders are growing in recognition of importance, and when serious and left untreated, they can cause significant morbidity, reduced quality of life, numerous hospitalizations and a burden to the local healthcare system.
