Geographic Mobility in the Past Year

Select a Zip Code
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the population who reside in the same house as one year ago.

Why is this important?

Geographic mobility shows how people move over time. People move, or do not move, for reasons related to economic opportunity, affordable living, access to resources, and family ties. When job prospects lessen in one geographic area, labor mobility allows workers to move to another. This is a key advantage of the U.S. labor market. Moving is the largest response to being laid off, but has declined in the past three decades. American culture traditionally encourages moving for better jobs and greater chances of financial success, but poverty and low-income have gone from reasons to move, to reasons not to move.
