This indicator shows the number of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) providers. MAT providers are able to treat opioid use disorder with buprenorphine and other medications.
Why is this important?
MAT providers are able to treat opioid use disorder with buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is the most common medication used to treat opioid use disorder and requires specific education and training by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In addition to education requirements, there are a limits on the number of patients a provider can prescribe MAT medications for during their first few years prescribing. Doctors are limited to 30 patients in year 1, 100 patients in year 2, and 275 patients for all subsequent years. Other healthcare providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants) are limited to 30 patients in year 1 and 100 patients for all subsequent years.
