Age-adjusted rates of hospitalization with principal/admitting diagnosis of a major depressive disorder among children (under 18). This diagnostic group includes single and recurrent episodes of major depression as well as chronic depression or dysthymic disorder. For the category of major depressive disorders, we included ICD-9-CM diagnoses (all codes staring with 296.2, 296.3, 296.80, 296.89, 300.4, and 301.12) and ICD-10-CM diagnoses (F32, and all codes starting with F32.0, F32.1, F32.2, F32.3, F32.4, F32.5, F32.8, F32.89, F33, and F34.1).
